The UDMR vice prime minister, Marko Bela, declared that Romania must not give up fighting for the chance to join the Schengen area in March.According to the vice prime minister, the Romanian diplomatic staff must fight till the last minute in order to reach this objective.
The vice prime minister’s statements were made after a number of German and French officials expressed their position against Romania’s accession to the Schengen area. Their position is politically motivated given that Romania fulfils all the technical requirements. But Marko Bela feels that Romania’s diplomatic staff shouldn’t come out of the race to try and join the Schengen area by March given the present climate in which other states, including Hungary, who holds the EU’s presidency, have expressed their support for Romania’s accession to happen as scheduled.
